Richard Glenn Jarvis was born in Plattsburgh, New York, in 1955; and has since lived in Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Nevada, California, and Oregon.  As a child, he went sledding and toboganning on the Minnesota golf courses; later, he built model rockets in the desert.  After high-school, Jarvis joined the Air Force as a ground radio-communications equipment repairman.  He graduated with honors from American River College with an AA in computer technology, and went to work in high-tech as a technician.  After several years, he moved into technical writing, where he has worked for high-tech hardware and software companies ever since.

Together with his wife, they have owned five sailboats, from small racers to 29-foot sloops.  In the past, Jarvis raced actively in a local sailing club, and also raced radio-controlled sailboats.  More recently, he crewed on a 100-foot, gaff-rigged training schooner in the Puget Sound, training American and international crews in sailing skills.  One of his dreams is to make a blue-water crossing.

Jarvis states that he is definitely a cat person, but that he can tolerate dogs if they're someone else's--in other words, his wife's.  He hates discourteous power-boat drivers, likes classical music and jazz, enjoys reading the classics, and is beginning to appreciate opera.  His hobbies include, as he puts it, "driving his wife crazy," playing golf, sailing, biking, motorcycling, and collecting and fixing pinball machines.  He also enjoys singing sea shanties, and currently boasts of having a voice like the one Domingo once compared to "Pavarotti on a bad day with a head cold."

He is married, to Tara K. Harper, a published SF author.  They have been married ten years.

What is it like being married to an author?

About Richard Jarvis's Family

Richard Jarvis' mother graduated from college with a degree in art education.  His father, now retired, was a professor of physics at the Mansfield college in Pennsylvania, and later with the EPA as a nuclear health physicist, where he performed lab audits at sites including White Sands, New Mexico.  His father was also part of the launch team for the Galileo satellite launch.

His eldest brother is a programmer for the University of Minnesota, and a bookmonger and bagpipe player on his own time.  His sister is a carpenter, whose skills are showcased in the design and craftsmanship of her home.  His youngest brother, like his father, is in nuclear health physics, specializing in monitoring areas and facilities that are performing decontamination processes.

His brother-in-law, who holds a Ph. D. in physics, is currently working at NIST as a research physicist.  One sister-in-law is in medical school and is working toward passing her boards in fall.  His other sister-in-law is a wholesaler in health foods, specialized cooking oils, and other products.
